ACC baseball teams begin NCAA Baseball Championship play Friday
Eight teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) will be part of the 64-team field in the upcoming 2023 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, which is set to begin this Friday.
Clemson, the ACC champion, will serve as a regional host, alongside Wake Forest, the winner of the Atlantic Division. Virginia, the winner of the Coastal Division, and Miami will also host regional games. Additionally, Boston College, Duke, North Carolina, and NC State have been announced as participants in the 2023 tournament, as revealed in the NCAA bracket unveiled on Monday.
Wake Forest, with a record of 47-10, secured the tournament's top overall seed. This marks their 15th appearance in the NCAA bracket and their second consecutive year. They became the seventh ACC program to earn the top overall seed since the current format was adopted in 1999, and the first from the conference since North Carolina in 2013.
Clemson received the No. 4 national seed, while Virginia and Miami were seeded seventh and ninth, respectively. Miami's inclusion in this year's NCAA tournament marks their 49th appearance, ranking them third nationally. Notably, Clemson enters the NCAAs with a 16-game winning streak, the second-longest active streak in the nation and the longest among Power 5 teams.
For 19 consecutive years, the ACC has consistently placed at least six teams in the NCAA tournament. This year marks the seventh occurrence since 2010 where at least eight ACC teams have earned spots in the field.
In each of the previous 16 years that the College World Series has been held, at least one ACC team has reached the tournament, with multiple ACC teams making it to the CWS ten times during that span. Over the past 16 College World Series, the ACC has sent a total of 29 teams, averaging just under two teams per season.
During the last 14 tournament years, a total of 107 ACC teams have received NCAA bids. Among the 14 current ACC teams, they have collectively accumulated 99 appearances in the College World Series.
In the ACC Baseball Championship final held at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, grad student Riley Bertram hit his first home run of the season during an eight-run seventh inning, leading Clemson to an 11-5 victory over Miami. The win secured Clemson's 16th ACC baseball championship, their first since 2016. Interestingly, each of the Tigers' last five head coaches has won the ACC title in their first year in the league.
