Emergency crews were called to the scene and began CPR. Settles was then taken to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was placed on life support. He was later transferred to Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
Settles' parents, Darryl and Lisa Owens, say their son is in critical condition. They are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and are asking for prayers for their son's recovery.
The cause of Settles' collapse is still under investigation. However, his parents say he has no history of heart problems.
Settles is a talented athlete who plays multiple sports. He is also a straight-A student and is well-liked by his classmates.
His parents say he is a fighter and they are hopeful that he will pull through.
"He's a strong kid," said his father. "He's a fighter."
Settles' story has touched the hearts of many people in the community. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover his medical expenses. As of Monday morning, the page had raised over $100,000.
"We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community," said his mother. "It means so much to us."
